This edition of inVentures News features information about the HiSOC® anaerobic groundwater bioremediation system.
The HiSOC® system is based on inVentures’ patented Gas inFusion technology - a unique method of infusing dissolved gas into liquids. At the heart of HiSOC® is a proprietary structured polymer mass transfer device that is filled with micro-porous hollow fiber material that provides an enormous surface area for mass transfer - in excess of 7000 m2/m3. It is hydrophobic and therefore excludes water. The system efficiently delivers hydrogen gas to groundwater by mass transfer without sparging.
HiSOC applications include:
• Anaerobic reductive dechlorination of chlorinated aliphatic
hydrocarbons such as PCE and TCE
• Nitrate reduction
• Perchlorate reduction
The dissolved hydrogen concentration achieved in the treatment well depends on the height of the water column in the well. Each atmosphere of pressure allows for a maximum of approximately 1.6 ppm of dissolved hydrogen. Hydrogen is continuously infused into the aquifer from a period of several months to up to several years, as needed at rate of 28 standard cubic centimeters/minute.
This passive delivery system for dissolved hydrogen provides an alternative to repeated injections of soluble organic electron donors or viscous fluids for long term treatment without affecting hydraulic conductivity and secondary water quality impacts.
